About the Event
Once an FOC event, our rriends from the FCA SW Region invite us to the historic Virginia City HIllclimb - because We Drive!
What is the Virginia City Hillclimb?
It’s a time trial in which drivers try to better their own quickest elapsed time to complete the 5.2-mile course. It is not a wheel-to-wheel competition, and cars are kept 60 seconds apart. It begins with a mandatory meeting of all drivers the night before the event. Each driver is required to check in, present a signed technical inspection form of their vehicle and helmet from an approved performance shop, and sign the FCA waiver of liability form. All event rules and safety procedures are presented and discussed, including how to respond to the different flags used by the course flaggers. Entrant packages are then provided which include the event schedule, car number, driver group, and FCA window sticker verifying that the driver is a current FCA member, and that the vehicle passed the technical inspection. Driver wristbands are distributed on Saturday morning verifying that the entrant attended the safety meeting, and met all event safety and technical requirements.
The Virginia City Hillclimb, which starts at an altitude of 5,000 feet, challenges drivers by requiring them to drive 5.2 miles through twenty-one turns and up 1,200 feet in elevation. The Hillclimb’s distinct advantage is that it is the only major hill climb in the United States that has a separate road for drivers to use to return to the start line. Drivers make runs up the hill using Nevada Route 341, a beautiful two-lane road which is closed to traffic during the entire 2-day event. After drivers complete the course and reach the top, they use parallel Nevada Route 342 to return to the start line, as opposed to other events without a return route where drivers must wait at the top of the hill until all have completed their runs, and then return back down the same road as a group to the start line.
